From the Owner-
Don’t let your dreams die inside of you. Larry Pardey once wrote, "go small, go simple, go now." Wiser words have never been spoken. I waited just a little longer. I waited til I had enough money. I waited til I had enough time. I waited just a bit too long. One phone call and my life has changed for now. There never will be the right time. We will never have enough. Money, space, freedom, experience… Fill in your own blanks, the time is now.
Putting a boat like Amica on the market wasn’t an easy choice but it is the right one. We are super stoked to pass the keys to adventure on to her next caretaker while we get our ducks in a row once again. The BCC isn’t for everyone. Let’s face it, a boat like this is an emotional purchase tied to the days when sailboats plied the oceans free of engines or restraints. If you have the wherewithal for a small ship like the BCC, I highly suggest you take e peek. She is small enough to be easily managed by one or two. She sails fair and easy like a great dinghy. When conditions change, she transforms into a sailing machine that will always bring you home safely and in relative comfort. Her cockpit is snug but comfortable. Her decks are wide, safe, and sure footed. With a cutter rig, she is stout and easily manageable.
Amica is ready, willing, and able. Just show up with a bottle of wine and a fews cans of food and chase your dreams before they die forever.
Why we sail: The world is a complicated place. Too noisy, too crowded, too fast. At times it almost feels inescapable. A small well found boat is more than a hobby. It’s more than a lifestyle. Sailing is freedom. I’ve heard it described as hours of boredom with intermittent seconds of sheer terror.
We like to joke that the BCC is slow, wet, and tender but that couldn’t be further from the truth. She is perfectly balanced when sailed properly and in smart trim. I could describe a hundred perfect days at sea each different from the other. One in particular, I can't remember where I was, but somewhere in BC, the wind was just off the quarter and rising. Dark clouds we building as was a summer gale but it was a typical summer day easily into the 90’s. Bit by bit I reduced sail as the wind and seas built. Eventually down to just a stays’l we were screaming along over hull speed. My boat was dry and stable. The power she generated was amazing but what I remember most was how stable she was. This is her element. It’s what she was built for - easy, fast, passages. I didn’t want that day to end.
People like to talk about storms but it’s the calms that will break you. The BCC was designed 25% overcanvased with her plain working sail. She is a dream in light air as well. She does, however, have a dirty little secret. Let’s face it, sometimes we just have to fire up the iron horse and get there. The BCC is one of the best motor sailors on the high seas. She never pounds and never complains as she smoothly pushes head into a nasty funk.
Having said this, there is more than sailing to sailing. The BCC sits quiet and rides easy while anchored in high winds and chop. Her manual windlass pulls chain easily and smooth as butter. Everything about this boat was set up as nuke proof and unstoppable from her easily handled sailing rig to her ground tackle. Amica is a a purebred of a sailing yacht. She is insulated and quiet inside. With 6 opening ports and 3 huge hatches, fresh cool air makes her a dream on hot summer days. In the off seasons, she is just right inside, aways warm and cozy. Her soft warm LED lighting perfectly reflects on her hand joined interior. I have to say she is perfect in every respect. Maybe I’m a bit overly smitten but there is some magic in Lyle's designs.
