SOUTHERLY is one of Francis S. Kinney’s famous Pipe Dream Cruising Sloops, as featured in the iconic book “Skene’s Elements of Yacht Design.” The book, from the early 60’s, was the cornerstone of wooden boat design and includes all line drawings, specifications, and photos of SOUTHERLY being built at the Oscar Schelin Yacht Yard in Kungsor, Sweden in 1961. Her mahogany planking used full length logs (buried in Sweden during the war!) with no butt ends. When recently sanded to a bare hull she boasted seems tight as a Steinway.
SOUTHERLY is an extremely well-designed and built weekender based on Kinney’s desire to improve upon the popular Concordia Yawl by adding a easier to handle sloop rig, extra pilot berth, better equipped galley, and a more comfortable cockpit.
SOUTHERLY is in excellent condition as described in a 2022 survey which is available. She is located on the West Coast in Seattle, WA. And has been professionally maintained by the same yard for over 20 years. Most recently a new Yanmar diesel was installed in 2022.
